 THE WRIGHT ENTERPRISES
The Wright Enterprises started many years ago in the Craft World and during that time Linda was also involved in doing her own Family History [Genealogy] Research. She got to a point whereby there were just over 6000 names in her Family Tree File and then lost the lot due to a computer crash. She could only find a back up copy "that worked" that had just over 1000 names and so the data entry started once more. Thank goodness for paper backups eh?
Further research proved that there are so many other family lines and when you walk down the street, you are more or less related to each and every person you pass - if you think seriously enough about it. This started us thinking and that meant that we now want to prove this as a fact. Unless you are a recent immigrant to New Zealand, have no family here married to a New Zealander, then you must be related in some way, no matter how distantly. It is such a small country in comparison to so many others around the world. Just take a look at your Family Tree and see how many surnames you have in it already for your immediate family just back to your grandparents including all siblings [brothers and sisters]. From the example below you can have a possibility of 5 Surnames just in that small tree without siblings and partners being included.

We have now found the site to house our Family Tree and all we need from you is your gedcom file for your family tree going back to the first immigrants down to you and we will import the file into the great big New Zealand Family Tree. With the help of you and many others this tree will grow very quickly and you should be able to find new relatives. New children are being born and others are being married every day in New Zealand and we need you to help keep those lines up to date at all times. When a person dies we would also appreciate your input to include the death and burial/cremation dates and places so the file is up to date and no dead people are still walking around New Zealand because they haven't been listed as having died. Mind you the program we are working with tells you if you want ot move on that this person is "rather old" and do you want to continue - giving you the chance to check for a death and enter it. There is bound to be some of that in the immediate future but we hope to iron out all those wrinkles pretty quickly, but we can only do it with your help of course. You are even able to have your own tree within our tree and when you work on your tree it automatically updates our tree as well. The only thing we don't want is your ancestors further back than your first immigrant family to New Zealand. If any are detected we will automatically delete them.
If Santa can keep his lists in order then so can we.
If you have a program that your family tree is stored on and can do gedcom files we would be very interested in obtaining your information from you [please include your source information in the file as far as you can]. Source informaton is very important when we get someone who wants to dispute the information that you may have contributed to the file. If you have certificates then please provide the information for these and where you got them from. We were going to have a credit system so that you could upload names and download the same amount without having to pay a fee. However, that was too complicated to put into practice. Instead we will import the names that we need from your file using Family Insight as we haven't got access to anything else that might help at this stage or be better for us. DON'T FORGET TO UPLOAD ANY PHOTOS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE AS WELL PLEASE.
Family Insight Will Compare two files side by side and we can add from this screen

If you are just starting out with your family history we will be happy to assist you as long as we have your basic information to start from and copies of any certificates, etc that you might have on your family. We have many sources available to us and you tell us how much you want to spend. We will not waste your money looking for something that you already have information on. This was a problem that we had initially with people who were doing research for us in other countries [even a couple in New Zealand] whereby we gave them the information, copies of certificates, etc that we had and then we get given the same information and copies of what we already had and given a charge for their research which was unwarranted. We will not do that to you. Rest assured that we are here to help you and it is also helping us at the same time to add more information to our New Zealand Family File. Because we are scratching each other's backs, so to speak, we have put a research fee of $10 per hour for our time. If you give us a limited amount that you can spend we will work within that boundary and if we get carried away with research and go over that amount please be assured that it is our problem and you will not be charged for further research other than what you would expect to receive from us.

Because all research costs us money, we were going to charge a subscRiption fee but we found that many people didn't want a bar of that so instead we would appreciate any donations you could make toward the costs that are involved in obtaining all the extra information that we can about the people who are already listed in the site and to find new people that aren't already located within the files that you have all provided. You might like to help with transcriptions from the cemetery or shipping records or other records that are publicly available to us. We would be very grateful to accept any help as well, as this is where there is loads of input required.
We are currently looking at becoming a Charitable Trust and that way we can approach different sponsors to back us so that we can get the information without too much problems. We look forward to having you join us and provide us with your family tree or ask us for our research help or just to see if we can supply you with further information on your family.
NEW RULES FOR CERTICATES
The government have issued new laws about obtaining copies of certificates so if you would like to have a copy of this which is listed in a pamphlet with the form to fill in for Births, Deaths and Marriages, then please contact us and we will send them out for you. The following information is taken from http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Births-Deaths-Marriages-and-Relationships-Registration-Amendment-Act?OpenDocument#three1. For a birth that occurred at least 100 years ago (subject to restrictions on pre-adoptive/ pre-sex-change information) or for a still-birth 50 years ago.
2. Where the death occurred at least 50 years ago, or the deceased person was born at least 80 years ago.
3. Where the marriage or civil union occurred at least 80 years ago.
Accessing Information on the Registers
6. What information is available on the registers now?
Generally, anyone can access their own registered information and the registered information of any other person on giving a name and paying a fee. The information is supplied in the form of a certificate or printout.
7. What will change when the Amendment Act comes into force?
Generally, anyone will still be able to access their own registered information and the registered information of any other person. If the information requested is not “historical” then reasonable identification will need to be provided. The Amendment Act also introduces a new access register and enables people to request that a non-disclosure direction be put in place on their records.
8. What is reasonable identification?
When anyone requests to access registered information that is not “historical” he or she will need to provide reasonable identification. Reasonable identification is a means of identification that is sufficient to allow the identity of that person to be established. Therefore from 25 January 2009, there will be three steps people generally need to follow when requesting a certificate or printout that is not “historical”:
Step 1
- The person applying for the certificate or printout (“the applicant”) must complete the usual information that is required on the order form, but also include their names at birth (if different from their current name), date of birth and place of birth; and
- Sign the order form to show that the information they have printed on the form is true and correct.
Step 2
- The applicant must then approach a person from the list below (subject to certain conditions, such as that they are not a relative) to also sign the order form. This person verifies the information the applicant has printed on the form.
- The applicant must show that person a government-issued photo identification (e.g. passport, drivers licence etc). The only exception to this is if the applicant’s birth is registered in New Zealand and the person has known the applicant for at least 12 months – in this case photo ID does not need to be presented.
- The person must be one of the following:
- Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages
- Lawyer
- Member of the Police
- Kaumatua
- Applicant’s employer
- Justice of the Peace
- Minister of religion
- Registered Teacher
- Registered medical doctor
- Notary Public
- Commonwealth representative.
Step 3
- Send us the completed order form with the fee by post, fax or deliver the order form to one of your offices.
YOU MAY OBTAIN THE FORMS FROM US ALSO by sending a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope for the return of the form. Just e-mail us [nzfamilytrees@yahoo.co.nz] or the copy to be posted to you if you want to deposit 60c into our bank account :
